Monsters don’t exist, we all know that right? But is this really the case or just a lie we tell ourselves so we don’t have to face reality. That’s precisely what Barbara Thorson thinks is happening, a nerdy girl living with her siblings and terminally ill mother she’s constantly being bullied at school due to her strange demeanour.

Barbara has shut herself off from the outside world, not because she necessarily wants to, but because she feels like it’s the only way. She’s the only person that can keep everyone safe from natural disasters, the figures causing them must be stopped... Giants and Titans

Early on, it’s obvious what the script leads you to believe; Do these giants truly exist? Why does it appear that nobody but Barbara can see them? Is the main character merely imagining the giants? These questions would create an intriguing story where the viewer would constantly wonder what is going on, only to be even more confused with each hint added. Yet, due to both Barbara’s personal life and what’s happening around her, the answer to all these questions seem too obvious. There’s a distinct contrast between the genres used in the film. Which both helps and harms the movie, due to the drama elements, the conclusion is even more obvious far before the film ends. It’s difficult to truly feel for the characters with such a lack of emotional investment, and that’s one more point where the movie falls through.

In the end, the viewer is left with a bland and painfully obvious plot that could’ve been improved; If only the movie would’ve been infused with a lot more mystery, it could’ve been an emotional masterpiece.

Verdict

What could’ve been an emotional journey based on the highly acclaimed Comic book written by Joe Kelly, sadly turned into a cheap money grab by the producers.
